Chociaż Mafia II jest kontynuacj±, przedstawia zupełnie odrębn± historię. Nie oznacza to, że rozbudowana fabularnie poprzedniczka poszła w zapomnienie - w dwójce znajduje się mnóstwo nawi±zań i smaczków, czytelnych dla fanów. Zmieniaj± się jednak główni bohaterowie, czasy oraz miejsce akcji. Wcielamy się bowiem w postać Vito Scalettiego, w momencie, gdy kończy on służbę wojskow± i zim± 1946 roku wraca do domu - monumentalnego Empire Bay (10 mil kwadratowych), będ±cego w rzeczywisto¶ci wirtualn± adaptacj± Nowego Jorku (odwzorowanego w do¶ć luĽny sposób, wraz z kilkunastoma charakterystycznymi budowlami, jak np.: Empire State Building czy most Brooklyński). Metropolia składa się z kilku różnych dzielnic (np. Chinatown, przemysłowa Millville, portowe Oysterbay i Southport, kraina bogaczy Klingstone), w¶ród których dla tej historii najważniejsze s± oczywi¶cie Małe Włochy (Little Italy). Vito, wraz z przyjacielem Joe Barbaro, próbuj± odnaleĽć się na powrót w tej rzeczywisto¶ci. Nie zamierzaj± jednak zatrudnić się w dokach jako tania siła robocza. Czeka na nich bowiem „kariera” w ¶wiecie przestępczym, w szeregach jednej z lokalnych rodzin mafijnych.
Zmiana okresu, w jakim dzieje się akcja, oznacza nowe, jeszcze bardziej okrutne realia oraz nieco inn± stylistykę (także szybsze samochody). Druga odsłona serii oferuje znacznie większ± swobodę od pierwowzoru. Zamiast jednej tylko „rodziny” otrzymujemy możliwo¶ć postawienia się po jednej z trzech stron. Naturalnie wspieranie jednej frakcji prowadzi przeważnie do złych stosunków z innymi, a czasem nawet wojny. Sama fabuła została podzielona na dwa zasadnicze podrozdziały, prowadz±ce do jednego z kilku możliwych zakończeń. Tre¶ć gry to przede wszystkim wykonywane przez nas zadania, od których zależy nasza pozycja i reputacja. Każdy, kto widział filmy o mafii, wie czego się spodziewać – wymuszenia, porwania, napady i pomoc członkom naszej „rodziny”. Wszystko to spięte niezwykle ciekawym w±tkiem głównym, pełnym zwrotów akcji, napięcia i charakterystycznego, czarnego humoru.
Prócz tego w mie¶cie czeka na nas mnóstwo atrakcji, zarówno legalnych jak i niezgodnych z prawem. Możemy więc kra¶ć pojazdy (na szybko, przez zbicie szyby, lub subtelnie, przez włamanie), wybieraj±c z pięćdziesięciu modeli wzorowanych na prawdziwych markach, a póĽniej ulepszać je i modyfikować w warsztacie. Je¶li kto¶ wolałby bardziej oficjalnych metod, może po prostu auto kupić. Wozy to nie jedyne dobra, jakie oferuj± sklepy – s± i ubrania (przydatne czasem, gdy ¶ciga nas policja), jedzenie, a nawet opcja kupna własnych czterech k±tów.
¦wiat gry odnotowuje upływ czasu – w kwestii zarówno cyklu dnia i nocy, jak i zmieniaj±cych się pór roku – co jednak jest w pewnym stopniu uzależnione od fabuły. Wachlarz nowych umiejętno¶ci zyskał także nasz podopieczny, który potrafi bić się na pię¶ci z wykorzystaniem większej liczby ciosów oraz przeskakiwać przez płoty.
Mafia II wykonana została na nowym silniku graficznym. Z jego pomoc± - podobnie jak w czę¶ci pierwszej - ¶wietnie odwzorowano przede wszystkim twarze bohaterów, ich mimikę (za któr± odpowiada ponad 30 mię¶ni twarzy) oraz animację. Sprawia to, że prezentowane w dużych ilo¶ciach przerywniki, zrealizowane na silniku graficznym, sprawiaj± wrażenie niemal wyreżyserowanych filmów z żywymi aktorami. SCREENSHOTS:
