The Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982)
In 1532 a Spanish orphan named Esteban joins Mendoza, a navigator, and his associates Sancho and Pedro, in their search for one of The Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father. They are joined on their quest by Zia, an Incan girl, and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English dub).

The series is a mix of ancient South American history, archaeology, and science fiction. The travellers encounter the Maya, Inca, and Olmecs during their journey. They discover many lost technological wonders of the Mu Empire, including a solar powered ship (the Solaris) and The Golden Condor, a huge solar-powered would-be ornithopter (mechanical bird), capable of traveling considerable distances under the sun's power alone. They are constantly pursued by antagonists Gomez and Gaspard, who are also in search of the Cities of Gold.

* Esteban (voiced by Shiraz Adam) – An orphan who was rescued at sea as a baby twelve years ago by the Spanish navigator Mendoza. He wears one of the two sun medallions. He dreams of adventure and is very impulsive. Esteban has a fear of heights which is confounded by the people of Barcelona who believe him to be the "Child of the Sun and hoist him up high at the port to call out the sun to aid the departing ships. He joins the Spaniards in their search for one of The Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father.

* Zia (voiced by Janice Chaikelson) – The daughter of an Inca high priest. She was kidnapped from Peru five years ago, when she was seven, by the Spanish invaders and given as a present to the Queen of Spain for her daughter, Princess Margarita. She met Esteban when she was kidnapped by Mendoza for Governor Pizarro who wanted her to read the golden quipu. Zia wears a sun medallion like Esteban's, with an interlocking sun and moon disc.

* Tao (voiced by Adrian Knight) – The last living descendant of the sunken empire of Mu (Hiva in the English dub). He lived alone on the Galapagos islands following the death of his father. Initially he is evasive to the others' company when they wash up on his island, but when the ship Solaris was revealed he joined them on their journey.

* Mendoza (voiced by Howard Ryshpan) – A Spaniard, navigator for the Spanish fleet. He rescued a young Esteban from a shipwreck during one of his voyages. An experienced sailor, a proficient navigator and a master swordsman, Mendoza places himself in the role of a leader. It is not always clear, however, where his loyalties lie and as such he is often at odds with the other characters. He is accompanied by two mercenaries, Sancho and Pedro. Mendoza has spent many years searching for information about the Mysterious Cities of Gold, which eventually led him to the sun medallions — one of which he took from Esteban when rescuing him for safe keeping.

* Commander Gomez (voiced by Matt Berman) – Greedy and vicious commander of the Spanish armed forces who is ruthless in his task of serving Governor Pizarro and the pursuit of Esteban and Zia.

* Captain Gaspard (voiced by A.J. Henderson) – Sycophantically loyal subordinate of Señor Gomez. He is the Captain of the Guard, commanding a large number of Spanish soldiers. He is uncouth and rather unintelligent but has a firm command of his troops and is physically very strong. In the long term, gold and loyalty to Gomez are the only things that interest him.

* Governor Pizarro (voiced by Maurice Podbrey) – Pizarro is the appointed governor of the entire invaded region of South America. He commands the Spanish invasion forces, including Señor Gomez and Captain Gaspard. He is a ruthless and avaricious despotic commander who holds little value for others' lives unless they serve to aid his purpose.

To-Y (1987)

http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...20me/to-y1.jpghttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489859/

http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...20me/to-y2.jpgIf you don't remember, To-Y is the really cool movie [OAV] we saw at last semester's marathon (you know, the one about the band). I thought it was one of the best movies I've ever seen and it really left an impression on me. Why? It was just too cool! Or maybe I have weird taste (GASP!). Anyhow, since that first showing, a few of us have rewatched the movie several times (6 times, myself).

Near the end of the semester, the executive board of CJAS debated whether or not To-Y should be shown. We moved To-Y from the last meeting of the semester to the marathon due to the fact that no one knew how well it would be accepted by the audience. From the way we were handling the showing of the movie, I was unsure of whether or not I'd like it. But I had also heard good things about the movie, so I had to see it for myself before making a judgement.

I thought it was great! I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it, the slick art, the music, the themes; the overall presentation really impressed me.

One of the story's main themes was the plight of those on the fringe of society and their struggle not to "sell out" to those of the mainstream. I found the movie remarkably effective in its ability to make GASP and its friends and its fans so "real," in that they had depth and a sense of power to them that could not go unnoticed. The mainstream of society, as exemplified by Aikawa Yoji and his followers, was well portrayed as not being necessarily bad, but tainted by being shallow, superficial, and lacking of any real substance. Hence, I found myself much more willing to relate to GASP. In this way, I found myself relating well with the movie, in general.

The artwork meshed very well with the story and the music. The whole movie, its pacing, visual effects, and the transitions between To-Y and Aikawa, gave me the impression that I was watching an extremely complex and well-crafted music video. The music was powerful and a definite plus (I listen to the soundtrack frequently). Like I said, I just really appreciate how well put-together the whole piece was.

One of the things which took me awhile to work out was the relationship between the characters To-Y and Niya (the catgirl). Niya introduced herself to Sonoko (To-Y's cousin) as "To-Y's lover." The first trick was to figure out that Niya was a girl. After that, I've decided that the movie, in addition to being about the fringe of society trying to maintain itself and its identity, was also a portrait of To-Y and Niya's relationship. I think that the relationship between To-Y and Niya was portrayed beautifully, and it moved me unlike many of the so-called "love stories" we see nowadays. Others I have talked to have said that To-Y treats Niya much like a younger sister. Even so, we know that they are not siblings, and their relationship is a very close one. To-Y and Niya are essentially best friends, and even though they do not act like the typical anime couple in love, there is no doubt that they love each other. You see that they share a very special bond, and there is no angst whatsoever in their relationship. To-Y, who according to James often seems like an android, is the most human when he is with Niya, and she shows a strong devotion to him. Niya, like a cat, is highly individualistic, yet she stands by To-Y when he needs her most, as they are the only constants in each other's lives. Their relationship is nothing like that which we normally see in anime and other movies. I found it to be very real and refreshing. Hence, one of the themes is that even if you aren't accepted by the whole of society, if you aren't a "superstar" like Aikawa, as long as you have loyal and devoted friends, that's all you really need in life.

To the mainstream, neither To-Y nor Niya was accepted as being normal, but they provided support for each other in their own world, and the last image of them walking hand in hand will last with me for a long time to come.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x.../000ba12c.jpegThis short, an Oscar winner, is an exceptionally detailed effort that can be a bit unsettling at first (particularly for anyone who has problems with depth-perception), but is a fascinatingly drawn and meticulously constructed animation and is a must-see if you like animation. Rain Down From Above - Ivan Maximov (2007)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...320/222222.pngIt is pouring down outside and there is not a glimmer of light in the sky. Not to worry, today it is time to immerse oneself in the aquatic world of one of my all time favourite animators Ivan Maximov and a gorgeous high definition (229mb) version of his 2007 Rain Down From Above. Visitors to the Animation Blog will be well aware of my fascination for his work. Here we are again in the same alternative universe of childhood where a girl and her puppy and three baby elephants exist happily enough until the rains come. Their home is perched high on a hill and the adults, for such there are even in Ivan's universe, leave the youngsters to get on with their chores. The elephants make hay while the sun shines though the onslaught of the deluge wreaks havoc, flooding the homes, washing away the sculptor's clay model and, calamity, sweeping the elephants and the little girl in the red dress down the hillside with a crashing waterfall ahead. No fears. The water spells fun for the other girl and her puppy on the water-driven roundabout and there's always a man with a net around when one needs one. Ivan is very sparing in his use of colour: aforementioned dress, band around the captain's hat and there's that metallic green fish we get to see. His characters are eccentric, whilst the artwork is magnificent, light and shade beautifully realised in the predominantly hand drawn work that has such clear delineation of light and shade; and always that eye for the idiosyncrasies and humour of life. Worth giving the images a click for the detail. Watch Ivan's work and the sun shines.
