Segundo de Chomón - 71 films (1902/11)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...320/Chomo.jpegSpanish film pioneer Segundo de Chomón spent most of his influential career associated with Pathé Laboratories. Chomón joined the company in 1901 and set up a laboratory for adding color to film in Barcelona. He started directing newsreels the following year. Chomón's innovations include the development of several camera tricks, including single-frame techniques, optical dissolves, and complicated traveling shots. In 1902, Chomón successfully combined live-action with miniatures in the short Choque de Trenes/Collision of Trains. In 1905, he was the first Spanish filmmaker to use stop-motion techniques in Eclipse de Sol/Eclipse of the Sun. Toward the end of 1905, Chomón relocated to Paris to direct over 100 short films for Pathé; he also shared his techniques with other directors. He first used the traveling shot (the first time it was ever used) in a scene for La Vie et la Passion de Notre Seigneur Jesus Christ/The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ (1907), which was directed by Ferdinand Zecca and Lucien Nonguet. Chomón accomplished the shot by devising a special skating device, and perfected the special shot while filming Cabiria for Italian director Giovanni Pastrone in 1914.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...20/Chomo3.jpegIn 1909, Chomón was among the first to use silhouettes in one of the first animated films, the surreal Une Excursion Incoherente/Traveler's Nightmare. Chomón returned to Barcelona in 1910 and worked closely with Juan Fuster to create a series of short fiction films. In 1911, he produced a series of travel documentaries for Pathé and later in the year founded Ibérico, his own production company (he released his films through Pathé). Chomón moved to Italy in 1912 and worked as a cinematographer and special effects technician with the Italia Film company, for whom Chomón also directed several animated shorts.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...20/Chomo2.jpegChomón co-invented a two-tone color process in the 1920s with Swiss engineer Ernest Zollinger. The pair later exhibited two color films at various science expos. Chomón died of illness in Paris in 1929 shortly after returning from Morocco where he was shooting color footage.

Skazka skazok (Tale of tales) - Yuriy Norshteyn (1979)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...0/tale3et7.jpg

Tale of Tales (Russian: Сказка сказок, Skazka skazok) is a 1979 Soviet animated film directed by Yuriy Norshteyn and produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow. It has won numerous awards, and has been acclaimed by critics and other animators as the greatest animated film of all time. It has been the subject of a 2005 book by Clare Kitson titled Yuri Norstein and Tale of Tales: An Animator's Journey.
Tale of Tales, like Tarkovsky's Mirror, attempts to structure itself like a human memory. Memories are not recalled in neat chronological order; instead, they are recalled by the association of one thing with another, which means that any attempt to put memory on film cannot be told like a conventional narrative. The film is thus made up of a series of related sequences whose scenes are interspersed between each other. One of the primary themes involves war, with particular emphasis on the enormous losses the Soviet Union suffered on the Eastern Front during World War II. Several recurring characters and their interactions make up a large part of the film, such as the poet, the little girl and the bull, the little boy and the crows, the dancers and the soldiers, and especially the little grey wolf (Russian: се́ренький волчо́к, syeryenkiy volchok). Another symbol connecting nearly all of these different themes are green apples (which may symbolize life, hope, or potential).
Yuriy Norshteyn wrote in Iskusstvo Kino magazine that the film is "about simple concepts that give you the strength to live."

Franz Kafka (Piotr Dumala) - 1991

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...25_medium.jpeg

In Franz Kafka, Dumala shows us scenes from Kafka's life, from youth, through the ripening of his creative genius to his eventual isolation. Taking Kafka's diaries, letters and novels themselves as its source, the film includes documentary material - from photos taken by Kafka between 1883 and 1924 to images of Prague at the turn of the century.
Piotr Dumala was born in Poland and studied sculpture and animation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His award-winning animated ?lms include Lagodna (Gentle Spirit, 1985), Nerwowe zycie kosmosu (Nervous Life of the Universe, 1986), Sciany (Walls, 1987), Wolnosc nogi (Freedom of the Leg, 1988), and Franz Kafka (1990).http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x.../capssssss.png
Dumala's films have won multiple awards. Lagodna was winner of the Golden Ducat at the International Film Festival in Mannheim, Germany, in 1985, and received an award for the Best Animated Film at the International Short Film Festival in Toures, France. Dumala received a Mister Linea Award at the Treviso International Animation Festival for his 24 episodes of the series Nerwowe zycie, and, in 1998, Sciany received the Grand Prix at the International Short Film Festival in Krakow, Poland, and Special Jury Award at the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France. In 1992, Franz Kafka received the Grand Prix at the 10th International Animation Film Festival in Zagreb, Best Animated Film at the International Film Festival in Madrid, Grand Prix at the International Animated Film Festival in Espinho, and Best Cartoon Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Dumala's most recent piece is an adaptation of Dostoyevski's Crime and Punishment (Zbrodnia i kara) which premiered at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in September 2000 and received the prize for Best Design at that festival. In 2001, Crime and Punishment was awarded the Public Prize at the Summer Film Festival in Kazimierz, Poland, and at the International Animation Film Festival in Espinho. In 2003 Dumala was awarded a Luna de Valencia at the Valencia Film Festival for his lifetime achievement in animation. He received the Albin Brunovski Prize in Uherske Hradiste for his artistic creativity in the art of animation, and a Grande FeFe Award at the FeFe Festival in Warsaw for his artistic independence in the field of animation. Dumala has created four MTV idents: Charlatan won the Broadcast Design Gold Award in Orlando, Florida, in 1994, and was a finalist in the New York festivals. Kafka Meets Dostoyevski received an International Broadcast Design Gold Award in 1996.
In addition, Dumala has made commercials and TV trailers; a short public service announcement for Amnesty International; and a ten-second sequence created for the Absolut Vodka website showcasing independent animation. He teaches animation at the Film, Television and Drama School in Lodz, Poland; is a guest professor at the Animation House at Konstfack in Eksjö, Sweden; and a visiting lecturer at Harvard University. He is involved in writing and journalistic activities, and published Razor Game (Male, 2000), a collection of short stories. He also creates graphics, paintings, illustrations and poster designs. He is currently working on his new film The Forest.

Fritz the Cat (1972)

http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...es/fritz11.jpghttp://i493.photobucket.com/albums/r...xes/fritz6.jpgFritz the Cat is a college student in the New York of the nineteen-sixties, and more interested in where his next woman is coming from than his studies. Today he wanders down to the park with his guitar and two friends, who also carry guitars, to try and impress some "chicks" with their busking but when they get there they find to their disappointment that a lot of others have had the same idea. Nevertheless they strum away when a group of three young ladies walk past, yet to the buskers' dismay they're more interested in patronising a black crow who they try to make believe that there's a connection between them. When the crow dismisses them, Fritz seizes his chance and makes his move, playing the tortured artist and writer to the hilt. But will Fritz learn the true meaning of what he preaches?

Fritz the Cat was proudly proclaimed as the first X-rated feature length cartoon on its release, and after decades of depicting animals as people, it seemed as though American animators had finally taken things to their logical extreme with animals depicted swearing, having sex, fighting and partaking of alcohol and drugs with great enthusiasm. The film was the first feature from Ralph Bakshi, who quickly became a cult animator for his then-groundbreaking style, although here his trademark rotoscoping, that is drawing the frames over live action footage, was not so much in evidence as it would be in the future.

It was also the first feature to be adapted from the work of cartoonist Robert Crumb, and as legend has it, the legend being true this time, Crumb really hated it (the rumour was he wanted sole credit and sulked when he didn't receive it). Crumb was so annoyed with the result that he killed off Fritz almost immediately in a strip entitled "Fritz the Cat Superstar", where his character goes Hollywood and ends up with an ice pick in his head to finish him off ("Violence in the Media" says a caption). But while the film tries to emulate the daring and rejection of the sixties' new morals of Crumb's originals, it only succeeds so far, an example of the counterculture film in animated form and infused with an unimpressed cynicism regarding just about every character.

Fritz claims to be socially conscious, even radical in his politics, but everything he says is just means to have his wicked way with the females, who are either naive or sourly scornful. There's some novelty to be gained from watching the anthropomorphised cat's sexual exploits, which although not explicit leave you in no doubt about what is going on, but novelty is about as far as that aspect goes. More interesting is the social angle, which has the "whites" like Fritz (well, he's more of a light grey) wanting to be associated with the "blacks", that is the crows, without any understanding of the implications - almost everyone is hopelessly shallow. In spite of this, Fritz does befriend a crow who he helps score an incredible shot at pool and they end up stealing car together for a spot of joyriding, followed by a riot which Fritz starts with his rhetoric. By the finish, our hero seems to have had his consciousness raised by a damaging brush with genuine radicals, but there's still a lot of the old Fritz in him too. More interesting for its place in history, the film's bitterness doesn't raise many laughs but is skillfully handled. Music by Ed Bogas and Ray Shanklin.

Yoji Kuri - Film works (1965 - 1977)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x.../yurikuri2.jpg

The contemporary Japanese animator Yoji Kuri has enjoyed the most successful international career of all the many independent Japanese animators whose work stands in contradistinction to the more elaborate, more collaborative, and more commercial productions from such industrial giants as the Toei and Toho studios. As such, Kuri constitutes a fine example of the Japanese experimental film artist, being in a sense an Asian analogue to such animators as the American Robert Breer.http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...0/yurikuri.jpg
Kuri's early years were spent as a cartoonist, but by 1960 he had established a small independent studio which centered upon a solitary 35mm animation camera. In the following year he completed Human Zoo, which won the Bronze Medal at the Venice Film Festival in 1962. As the film-scholar Millie Paul suggests, it was this award that truly launched his career. The brief animated work that followed—such as the erotic Aos, the abstract Locus, the educational Discovery of Zero—allowed him to develop his reputation and style. The 1967 film The Room (which grew out of one of Kuri's flip-books) provides some insights into that style, and the structures which came to mark his acollaborative, independent animation through the 1960s and 1970s.
The Room is precisely five minutes long and is made up of 19 brief tableau units, each of which is largely confined to the rather surreal space of a stark and simple line drawing of an empty "room." Such simple, black-and-white line drawings are typical of Kuri's style, not unlike that of the American cartoonist James Thurber. Further, while The Room was shot—frame by frame, in an admixture of animated cels and cut-outs—on color stock, rarely does color appear in the film (and only then to heighten an effect or to underscore a mood). Tableau One provides the film's titles, which appear within the room's simple space. What follows are 18 disparate tableaux with almost no narrative causality or continuity between them. Each tableau itself is distinctly marked by often bizarre metamorphic transformations.
In Tableau Two, for example, two feet emerge from the room's right and left walls, then feet metamorphose into a bird which flies around the room. Such metamorphic transformations—where one figure seems almost to "melt" and then reform into a very different figure, linked to the first only by subtle topologic similarities—are one of Kuri's stylistic and structural hallmarks. The Room is replete with them, having more than 40. In lieu of more traditional (and commercial) narrative linkings between images, these metamorphoses underscore far more associational (and thematic) unities which bond Kuri's rapidly paced exchanges of mise en scène. The Room, like most of Kuri's work, is for adult audiences, and such themes as the conflict between the sexes, the violence of war, and bureaucratic boredom, predominate. But perhaps even more predominant is Kuri's artistic insistence upon graphic similarities: comparisons and contrasts of tones, lines, and forms which continue to reiterate the essential (etymological) meaning of our Western term "aesthetic" as "a study of sensation/perception."
Not only for The Room but for all of Kuri's extensive production (which likely exceeds 400 films, many unreleased, many others international prize winners), one must keep in mind Kuri's total control as an independent artist. All funding, conception, scripting, graphics, shooting, sound, editing, and even distribution are—in the main—from his hand. As a result, Kuri's films, such as The Room, are very personal, yet remarkably international, partly due to his penchant for soundtracks which avoid spoken language and which instead consist of an "international language" of sound effects and/or music.
Kuri's total artistic production is very varied. He began his creative life as a cartoonist and continues such work today. He continues to fashion flip-books, kinetic sculptures, paintings and drawings, and cut-out compositions. He is probably the best-known Japanese independent both in his own country and throughout the world. His satire and sexuality, his caricature and metamorphoses, and (perhaps above all) his post-Hiroshima "black humor" all bond together with an experimental willingness to explore various animation media. The result is seriously funny adult fare, at once popular and yet "theoretical" enough for the connoisseur and magically international in its appeal. He is a consummate, exemplary independent artist who is constantly and consistently creative.

Pingu (1987)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x.../pingu_dvd.png

Pingu
i.
The program is set in Antarctica, where the penguin families and businesses live and work in igloos.
One reason for Pingu's international success is the absence of human languages. All dialogue is in a honking "penguin language", and was initially performed without script by Carlo Bonomi (in a similar way to La Linea, which was also dubbed by Bonomi). This allows people of distinct linguistic backgrounds to still be able to follow the story.http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...ptura00005.jpghttp://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Xv5sqZ7y0x...ptura00002.jpg
